SUMMARY:Network Café - Fracking Waste and Rare Cancer w/ Justin Nobel
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a casual Network Café conversation with investigative journalist Justin Nobel about his latest investigation for DeSmog and Rolling Stone\, “Her Son Died of a Rare Bone Cancer. Could Radioactive Fracking Waste Be to Blame?” \nReporting on the ground in Cecil Township\, Pennsylvania\, Justin found unprotected radioactive oil and gas waste sitting just feet from a popular biking and walking trail. This was pipe-scale testing hundreds of times above federal safety limits\, in a community where multiple children have been diagnosed with a rare bone cancer. Join a conversation a network conversation with Justin to talk through what he uncovered\, what it means for the families living alongside these sites\, and what organizers and leaders can do in response. \nCome with your questions or topics to discuss with Justin Nobel. This is an informal discussion — a chance to dig into the story and connect with other leaders working to protect their communities from the harms of the oil & gas industry. \nAbout Justin Nobel \nJustin Nobel writes on science and the environment for U.S. magazines\, investigative outlets\, and literary journals\, and has been published in Best American Science and Nature Writing and Best American Travel Writing. His 2020 Rolling Stone story “America’s Radioactive Secret” won an award from the National Association of Science Writers and led to his book Petroleum-238. His reporting has sparked lawsuits\, academic research\, and public dialogue\, and has been taught at Harvard’s School of Public Health.
