SUMMARY:Behind the Toxic Chemical Recycling Curtain
DESCRIPTION:Hazardous chemicals on site at plastics “chemical recycling” and other types of industrial facilities put workers and communities at risk. This webinar is for anyone that wants to learn more about hazardous chemicals at “chemical recycling” facilities and how to get this kind of information for industrial facilities in your community. \nShannon Goff\, Advocacy Associate at NRDC\, will present highlights from NRDC’s recent issue brief: Behind the “chemical recycling” curtain: Public records requests reveal risky chemicals at facilities \nEve Gartner\, Director of Cross-Cutting Toxics Strategies at Earthjustice\, will discuss the Emergency Planning and Community Right to Know Act (EPCRA) and making public records requests for facilities in your community.

SUMMARY:Public Utility Commissions 101: Understanding Utility Regulation & How It Fits Into Your Data Center Fight
DESCRIPTION:As data centers place growing demands on our electric grid\, many of the biggest decisions about who pays for new infrastructure\, how much energy is needed\, where new transmission lines are built\, and how utilities plan for future growth happen before state Public Utility Commissions (PUCs). Yet for many community advocates\, the utility regulatory process can feel confusing\, technical\, and out of reach. \nIn this webinar\, Tanya Paslawski\, Founder and Principal of Elevated Engagement and Executive Director of the Community Energy Engagement Network\, will demystify the role of Public Utility Commissions and explain how data center development is increasingly shaping utility decisions. \nTanya will walk through where communities can engage in the process\, the types of utility proceedings that matter most\, and practical strategies for becoming more effective advocates. Whether you’re just beginning to explore utility regulation or looking to strengthen your engagement\, you’ll leave with a better understanding of where critical decisions are made\, and how your community can have a voice. \nSpeaker Bio: \nTanya Paslawski is the founder and principal of Elevated Engagement and serves as Executive Director of the Community Energy Engagement Network. \nShe is an attorney and energy industry veteran with over 25 years of experience in utility regulatory policy analysis\, development\, and advocacy\, serving in a variety of leadership roles in the public and private sectors. She is a trainer\, facilitator\, and organizer focused on supporting community advocacy and influence in utility regulatory decision-making. \nTanya serves as a director on the boards of We Want Green\, Too\, Southside Community Kitchen\, and the Institute for Energy Innovation. She has a law degree from Michigan State University College of Law with a concentration in environmental and natural resource law and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Oakland University. She is licensed to practice law in Michigan and is a Certified Diversity Professional.

SUMMARY:How Regulators Could Protect Residents from Radioactive Leachate in Landfills (but are they?)
DESCRIPTION:Spoiler alert\, they aren’t. \nLandfills across Pennsylvania take in radioactive fracking waste\, and it’s not just in Pennsylvania either. The leachate produced at these landfills is harmful and raises important questions for communities bearing the risks. \nHow can regulators protect communities instead of buckling to the pressure from industry? A line up of expert presenters from different organizations will present on the science\, health impacts\, a PA case study\, and resources we need to push back on fracking waste. \n

SUMMARY:Tracking the Data Center Industry: Insights from Southwestern Pennsylvania
DESCRIPTION:Southwestern Pennsylvania has seen a surge of data center proposals over the past year. These hyperscale projects are often sited in areas already shaped by fracked gas extraction\, energy infrastructure\, aging power grids\, and legacy pollution. Residents in these communities frequently face limited access to clear\, trustworthy project information while dealing with compressed approval timelines and technical\, hard-to-navigate decision-making processes. Many are asked to weigh promised economic benefits against risks to air quality\, water resources\, public health\, energy affordability\, and long-term land use. \nIn order to provide more accessible information\, FracTracker Alliance worked with four Pittsburgh-based students and recent graduates as they researched 12 data center proposals across Allegheny\, Washington\, Westmoreland\, Beaver\, Greene\, and Indiana counties. Over the last nine weeks\, the team attended public meetings\, filed Right-to-Know requests\, reviewed permits\, researched ordinances and zoning designations\, mapped potentially affected community resources and ecological sites\, and spoke with residents to get their side of the story. \nJoin this webinar to learn about the timelines\, technical details\, and next steps for major regional data center developments in Southwestern Pennsylvania\, with a focus on the Homer City Energy Campus\, the Springdale Data Center\, the Upper Burrell Data Center\, and Project Phoenix. \nThese data centers exemplify different important aspects of data center developments that we are seeing across the country\, including behind the meter power buildout\, the rallying of community voices and power\, the use of moratoriums to buy time to update local ordinances\, and a lack of developer and local government transparency.

SUMMARY:The Hunt for Yellow 7: Tracking Radioactive Oil & Gas Waste in Our Communities
DESCRIPTION:We need more eyes and ears in Pennsylvania communities to find out where radioactive oil and gas waste waste is going\, how it’s being transported\, and whether or not it’s being properly labeled as radioactive. This is why PSR PA and Protect PT just released a new guide that will help you dive deep into this issue and become prepared to keep watch in your community. You’ll learn about the rules of transport and disposal\, what should be happening versus what often happens\, what to keep your eyes on\, how to keep yourself safe\, and how to alert the proper authorities if you notice anything wrong. \nHelp us hunt for yellow 7.
