How to Make Public Record Requests like a Pro!

Watch and discuss on Halt the Harm Network (requires login)

Buckeye Environmental Network — an environmental justice organization that fights the waste stream of the O&G industry based out of Ohio — presents this training with long-time activist @Roxanne Groff.

This is a must-have skill for any environmentalist. Regulatory agencies do not advertise the mistakes or their permits for extractive industries.

This is knowledge left on the table by many grassroots activists; it’s public record that you have a right to! Teaching the grassroots how to write infallible public record requests elevates and informs their dialogue with decision-makers.

Even beyond dialoguing, having the hard facts gives grassroots the ability to hold agencies and elected officials accountable. One recent example of this is the East Palestine Train Derailment. Grassroots activists found out that Ohio EPA was not utilizing the proper methodology to test for dioxins. They utilized this information to hire independent testing and found dangerously elevated levels of dioxins which allowed them to take a nuanced approach in their campaign.

This training goes through Roxanne’s playbook of taking down 3 local oil and gas waste injection wells in her county in Athens, Ohio.
