Together, we can build a stronger and more connected movement capable of standing up to the oil & gas industry and its reckless harms on public health, lands, and resources.
Why Network?
The harms from fracking are real and well-documented, affecting air and water quality, public health, worker safety, wildlife and many other aspects of our lives.
That has given rise to a movement of dedicated individuals across the country fighting to protect against these dangers. They are advocating for legal and policy solutions and uncovering vital new information about the impacts of fracking and the tactics of fracking apologists seeking to expand drilling at all costs.
The problem is, we face a sophisticated, well-financed and unrelenting oil and gas industry that spends millions each year on advertising, lobbying and campaign contributions to buy power and influence at the national, state and local levels.
While this movement has come far – it has only begun to harness its full power to stand up to the oil & gas industry. The more we strengthen our networks, the stronger we are and the more leverage we have.
Our Mission
Halt the Harm is a people-powered network that connects Leaders and Supporters in the movement to halt the harms of fracking. Our goal is to solve problems, collaborate, share ideas, inspire each other, and halt gas development's impact on our families, communities and environment.
Our goal is to serve and support the community activists, leaders, experts, and other individuals advocating for the changes needed to halt the harm caused by fracking.
We don't run our own campaigns, lobby, or apply pressure to the industry. Instead, our purpose is to provide the communication tools, network, and support you need to do these things effectively.
This site is for people working in the movement to connect them to each other and to share and access services, resources, and tools.

Governance Structure
The Halt the Harm Network is dedicated to a transparent and open governance structure. We focus on creating a network structure that is both flexible and distributed. The governance of the Network must be representative of the people in the movement, accountable to them and responsive to their needs and constraints.
Responsibilities of the Core Advisory Board
- Participate in quarterly video calls.
- Stay briefed on the activities of the Halt the Harm Network and in tune with the issues and challenges leaders in the movement face.
- Review budget and work plans.
- Provide feedback on any activity that is unclear or does not support the vision of the Network.
- Provide support for the Network in the form of at least one of the following:
- Feedback on activities and services.
- Introductions to new Leaders and supporters.
- Funding for the Network’s operations and activities.
- Ideas for new services and activities that would support Leaders.
Requirements of Core Advisory Board Members
- Must have extensive experience working against the harms of fracking.
Time commitment of about 10-20 hours annually - Must be willing to dedicate necessary time to participate in at least 50 percent of the quarterly meetings per year and review materials in advance of calls.
- Must understand and align with the values of the Network and be willing to support its mission and goals.
The process for joining or leaving the Core Advisory Board is managed by the network operations team. The operations team is committed to keeping the Core Advisory Board to a group of people no more than 5 percent of the total number of Leaders, and who are representative of the movement in terms of expertise, gender, background and years in the field.

The Network’s governance is guided by the “FOLKS Protocols,” developed by Bill Traynor. Bill is a board member of Netcentric Campaigns and a partner at Trusted Space, a group that provides consulting and workshops to support grassroots action to connect people across lines of difference for mutual support, empowerment and quality of life.

To be involved in growing and supporting the movement through this network model, you can be involved in the Welcome Committee that connects with new leaders, moderate the network exchange, and answer questions in the Fracking Help Center.
