Hellbent tells the story of Grant Township, PA’s epic fight to prevent a fracking waste injection well from being built in their community.

The moderated discussion covered how the film came together, the community’s legal and organizing strategies, the Hellbender salamander’s role in the ecosystem, and ways to support the East Run Hellbenders’ ongoing advocacy.

In this clip from the Hellbent Panel Discussion, listen to Chad Nicholson from the Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund talk about the strategies Grant Township, PA employed to fight the proposed fracking wastewater injection well.

The town voted in a Home Rule Charter that banned fracking waste and granted legal rights to the Little Mahoning Watershed, using a “Rights of Nature” legal strategy. Chad explains the origins of this strategy and how it was adopted.
